My Son’s 9th Birthday Party: A Gamer-Themed Celebration He’ll Never Forget

This year, my son turned 9—and somehow that felt like a big one. Not quite a little kid anymore, but not fully in the “too cool for everything” phase either. So I knew I had to soak it up and make it special while I still can.

When I asked what kind of party he wanted, the answer came instantly: video games. From there, the whole vision started to come together. Read on to see how I made it come to life! (Note: some Amazon Affiliate links included, I may earn a commission on qualified purchases. But these are the actual products I used and loved to make this party memorable ❤️)

Going All Out (Because Why Not?)

I decided to lean all the way in. I created a greenery wall with a balloon garland backdrop that honestly felt like a full-on event setup. It gave the party a fun focal point and made everything feel a little more elevated—without losing the playful vibe.

But the real showstopper? The mobile video game trailer.

Picture this: a huge trailer pulling up, packed with gaming chairs, multiple gaming consoles, and all the energy you’d expect from a group of excited 9-year-olds. Add in the birthday boy's favorite music blasting, and it instantly became the coolest part of the party. The kids were obsessed—and I have to admit, it made hosting a lot easier since they were completely entertained.

Keeping Food Simple (and Stress-Free)

I’ve learned my lesson in the past—overcomplicating food is not the move. This time, I kept it easy and kid-approved: pizza, bags of chips, Capri Sun/bottles of water, and cupcakes for dessert. No stress, no fuss, and most importantly, no leftovers that went untouched.

Adding Personal Touches with My Cricut

One of my favorite parts of party planning is getting creative. I used my Cricut to make a custom banner, cupcake toppers, and custom cups which added that personal, handmade touch that makes everything feel a little more special.

But my absolute favorite detail?

The VIP Gamer Experience

I made VIP gamer lanyards for each of the kids. As they arrived, I greeted them one by one and said, “You’re on my VIP list!” before handing them their lanyard.

GAME ON VIP Pass for video game themed party

I’ll be honest—I was a little worried the kids might label it “cringe.” But good news: at 9 years old, we are not quite there yet.

Every single kid lit up when I called them my VIPs. It was such a small moment, but it made them feel included, special, and part of something exciting right from the start. And for me, that ended up being the highlight of the entire party. I created the design template myself on Canva - get the link to download for free below! Pair my free download with these perfect lanyards that even come in the perfect Nintendo Switch shade of blue and you are ready for your own list of VIPs!

I also gifted the kids some light up bracelets, since it was dark on the gaming trailer and I thought it would be a fun touch!

Favors

I am personally not a fan of party favors that just end up in landfills. Instead of little plastic toys they will never touch again, I usually go with some custom design sugar cookies from local bakers. What kid doesn't love cookies? Plus, with custom designs they can be a great way to incorporate your theme. For this party, I got some very meme-worthy sunglasses (which the kids loved posing in!) and some Hershey's miniature chocolates which I wrapped in an on-theme label.

Find Your Gamer Name Activity

The kids were totally hyped with the "Find Your Gamer Name" activity I put together! By pairing their birth month with the first letter of their name, they ended up with hilarious gamer names. I printed some blank template name tag stickers so they could all show off their cool new identities. Plus, I've created my own version of this activity with fun signs and name tag templates, available in my Linktree shop!

What I’ll Remember Most

Yes, the decorations were fun. Yes, the trailer was a hit. But what stuck with me most was watching my son laugh with his friends, fully in his element, feeling celebrated.

That’s really what it’s all about.

Because no matter how much planning goes into it, the goal isn’t perfection—it’s creating a day they’ll remember.

And this one? I think we nailed it.
